For this blog post I will be showing you how to make your own pattern for a mini tote. These cute little bags have been in-style lately and it is the ultimate scrap busting project. These bags are also statement pieces and it is really easy to make one to match each and every one of your outfits.
***This post will be just for the pattern there will be no assembly instructions for the bag until the next blog post.***
Just as a reminder NONE OF THIS ILLUSTRATIONS ARE TO SCALE, THEY ARE SOLELY TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF HOW YOUR PATTERN PIECES SHOULD LOOK.
Items needed for this tutorial:
- Pattern paper
- Pencil or pen
Now lets begin. This pattern contains only 3 pieces.
The first Piece is the main part of the bag. This is a rectangular piece (all seam allowances are included) and the measurements are as follows:
The purple triangle at the top indicates a notch for placing the handle tabs when assembling.
The second piece is the bag contrast. Please pay close attention to the measurements in the diagram as this piece is oddly shaped (all seam allowances are included).
This piece is cut on the fold to ensure your contrast is symmetrical. You will have to place a notch on both sides of the fold (not pictured here) for assembly later.
The last piece is the handle tab. This piece is the piece that will hold the handles you choose to use for this bag and is a simple rectangle.
The purple triangles are indicative of notches to match to the “bag main” piece during assembly of your bag. These notches should be at the center of your handle tab. No seam allowances are needed for the handle tabs, you can also choose to make them thinner if you choose.
Now that you have the pattern down, keep an eye out for my next tutorial on how to assemble your mini tote bag!
